We provide surgical abortion up to 23.6 weeks of pregnancy. Surgical abortion involves the use of gentle suction and medical instruments to remove the pregnancy from the uterus. This procedure is completed in 1 day up to 16 weeks of pregnancy and is a 2-day procedure after 16 weeks of pregnancy. Procedures beyond 12 weeks of pregnancy will require the use of misoprostol, laminaria (cervical dilators), or both for preparation of the cervix before the abortion. Twilight (IV) sedation is available for surgical procedures.
We understand that the decision to terminate a pregnancy may not be an easy one and we strongly support your ability to decide what’s best for you. You are the most important person involved in your health care and your informed participation in decisions regarding your care is important to us. Nearly half of all American women will have an unintended pregnancy by the age of 45 – you are not alone. The more you understand, the better you will be able to take care of yourself. It is our sincerest concern that your experience at Desert Star Family Planning is positive and that you’re are taken care of in a pleasant, professional, and caring manner.
NOTE: The state of Arizona requires scripted information to be given and an ultrasound performed at least 24 hours before an abortion procedure.

Arizona law requires that women under 18 years old seeking an abortion must either have the notarized written permission of one of their parents/legal guardian or permission from a Superior Court Judge.

The process of obtaining permission for an abortion from a judge is called Judicial Bypass. In order to obtain a judicial bypass, you must visit the Superior Court in the county where you live and file an application at the Clerk of the Court’s Office. The clerk will assign you a lawyer to present you at no charge. The clerk will then take the application to the judge, who often hears the case the same day. If that is not possible, you will be given a notice of a hearing.
You may download necessary forms and find the location of your local superior court from:
After the hearing, the judge will decide whether you may proceed with the abortion. Usually, the judge makes a decision right away, and a written Court Order is given immediately. If not, the clerk will arrange a way to get the decision to you.

Is abortion safe?
Yes. While every surgical procedure involves some risk, the truth is that abortion is one of the safest and most common out-patient surgeries in the U.S.
Does abortion hurt?
Many women describe the feeling as similar to strong menstrual cramps. Every woman is different so we offer several pain management options to help you feel comfortable.
What do you give for pain?
Since each woman is different, we offer a variety of comfort medication. Take-Home pain medication is commonly prescribed for medication abortion, and our surgical patients are usually given the option of IV Sedation during the procedure.
Will I be able to have children later?
There is no scientific evidence, whatsoever, that abortion is in any way linked to infertility.
What’s better, the surgical abortion or pill abortion method?
Both abortion by pill and surgical procedures are effective and safe. Some patients prefer the convenience of the surgical procedure because they know their abortion is complete and can return to regular activities. Some women prefer completing the abortion in the comfort of their own home. The fees for both are comparable and insurance and funding sources can help cover either choice.
Can someone come into the procedure room with me?
We welcome your friend, partner or family member if you wish to have them with you during your appointment day. However, visitors are not able to accompany you into the procedure room or recovery area.
Is the abortion confidential?
Any and all information obtained by Desert Star Family Planning will be kept confidential, unless requested by a patient with a corresponding valid ID and a medical release request. We do not confirm appointments over the phone and will not acknowledge that you are a patient at the office unless you give us your permission to do so.
Do I need my parent’s permission to have an abortion?
We support families and are willing to help you find a way to talk with your parents. We also understand this is not possible for every family, or every teen. The State of Arizona requires minors (any individual under the age of 18) to have the consent of one parent or guardian before an abortion is performed. If you are not able to get your parent’s consent, you may complete an application at your local courthouse for a judicial bypass.
Please click the judicial bypass tab for more information.
Do you take insurance?
Yes. Desert Star Family Planning is contracted with a number of health plans. Every insurance plan and coverage is a bit different. If you’d like to know more about what your insurance plan will cover, call us and we will help you figure it out.
Do you offer financial help or payment plans?
We are not set up to do payment plans, but we are affiliated with agencies that can assist you with funding for your abortion procedure. Call us for more information.
